African American Woman Activist for Justice for South Africa's Children Comes Home to the U.S. in March 2005

(PRWEB) January 31, 2005

?Powerful in its message and arresting in its fervent plea to make sense of the senseless, this book is a clarion call to the God in all of us that we might wake up and stop the madness.? --LeVar Burton, actor, director, and children?s advocate

Claudia J. Ford?African American woman, globetrotting ex-patriot, midwife, activist, scholar, feminist, author, mother?has spent the past several years spreading global awareness of the horrors of infant rape in sub-Saharan Africa. She was inspired to do this by her adoption of an infant named Vyanna, who at five months old survived a brutal gang rape on the streets of Johannesburg, South Africa, where Ford has made her home for a number of years. Ford will be traveling to the United States in March 2005, and will be available for appearances, workshops, speaking engagements, and media interviews.

Ford?s life story thus far has been nothing less than extraordinary. Since graduating Barnard College in 1976, she has lived on nearly every continent on the world, honing her expertise on issues of international development while raising three sons on her own. Her sons are now grown men who continue to inform Ford?s scholarly work around notions of masculinity and power, particularly in the realm of childrearing. Ford?s work in this realm of late has crystallized around her experiences mothering Vyanna. Ford?s recently published memoir, Why Do I Scream at God for the Rape of Babies? (North Atlantic Books, December 2004, Trade Paperback, $ 9.95, ISBN: 1-55643-547-9) chronicles the first two years of Vyanna?s life, beginning with their first chance meeting in a Johannesburg hospital ward.

Claudia J. Ford and the organization she founded, The Princess Trust, are taking on infant rape itself, raising funds to provide support for survivors while studying the root causes of such an epidemic with an eye towards bringing it to an end. Her efforts have reached the attention of Oprah Winfrey, who hosted Ford on The Oprah Winfrey Show in July of 2004. With its frank and multi-faceted approach to this issue, along with 51 percent of its proceeds going to The Princess Trust, Why Do I Scream at God for the Rape of Babies? is an enormous part of those efforts.

For press materials, review copies, or to interview Claudia J. Ford, please contact Olivia Ford, Publicist, North Atlantic Books/Frog, Ltd., (510) 559-8277 ext. 18, oford@northatlanticbooks.com.

Local Event Helps Phoenix Children, One Miracle at a Time

Prescott, AZ (PRWEB) August 02, 2011

Robin Fleck, M.D and her staff worked alongside the Prescott, Arizona, Costco Corporation this past May to participate in the Children?s Miracle Network Fundraiser for the third year in a row. The event gives local businesses the opportunity to meet Costco customers while they shop, serving the Phoenix Children?s Hospital at the same time.

The Children?s Miracle Network is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children by raising funds for the Phoenix Children?s Hospital. Each year the hospital provides the finest in children?s medical care, life-saving research and preventative education to help many overcome a multitude of injuries and diseases. This fundraiser lets businesses contribute to a great cause while also being able to educate a diverse group of people.

At this event, Vein Specialties set up an on-site examination area where Dr. Fleck was able to answer questions about varicose vein treatments, such as endovenous laser treatment or EVLA and sclerotherapy, while also assessing a person?s need for treatment. ?Getting out into our community and meeting new people at health fairs like this has made a difference in how I run my own practice,? Robin Fleck stated. ?I have the chance to meet many people in a few hours' time and see exactly what the public is looking for in quality health care.? Many people are unaware of the severity and potential health risks that varicose veins represent, including leg ulcers and blood clots. This venue made it possible for Costco customers to approach Dr. Fleck with questions and concerns about their varicose veins and spider veins and also learn about the new advances in minimally invasive procedures which she administers at Vein Specialties.

Dr. Fleck?s cosmetic medical spa, Body Oasis Laser Aesthetics, was represented by two of her licensed laser technicians who distributed free samples of skin care products and gave advice on proper skin care and sun protection. ?Being able to speak face to face about the laser treatments we offer was very beneficial,? remarked Maureen Brogan, spa coordinator and laser technician. ?A lot of people don?t realize what laser treatments can accomplish with minimal downtime, such as correcting sun damaged skin or wrinkles. Before and after pictures are taken in our office so they can see the results right there.? Body Oasis also provides clients with a free consultation using the Visia computerized skin analysis system, helping clients see which laser treatment would best suit their needs.

The laser treatments offered at Body Oasis give clients the option of treating their aesthetic concerns without having to undergo cosmetic surgery. ?We are able to treat the delicate skin around the eyes to repair dark under-eye circles or even baggy eyelids,? commented Lisa Ramirez, laser technician at Body Oasis. ?We tell our clients that if they give us 5 days, we can give them back 5 years without having a facelift.? Other laser treatments available at Body Oasis focus on removing age spots, fine lines, acne scarring, and even hair removal.

?When speaking to the consumer, being knowledgeable about all aspects of the lasers we carry is the key,? Lisa Ramirez noted. ?We explain to a client how the laser works, as well as what to expect. This puts them at ease and lets them appreciate the amazing results.? The event supplied the platform for Body Oasis to target individuals who may not have been aware of the advantages of laser treatments, such as skin tightening and treating skin disorders like rosacea. ?When people learned we provide tattoo removal, they started to tell us stories about the ?regret? tattoos they have,? noted Lisa. ?This kind of event provides us with the chance to educate the public and tell them a little bit about what we do, while also helping the Children?s Miracle Network.?

Maureen Brogan delighted in telling people about the ActiveFX fractional resurfacing laser, having undergone treatment herself three years ago for dark circles under her eyes. ?People are thrilled when they see the results,? Maureen said. ?Active FX laser yields remarkable, long lasting results with just one treatment.? Maureen and Lisa, along with Deirdre Morris, administrative assistant for Southwest Skin and Cancer Institute, took time to inform potential clients about the dermatological services we provide. ?People love that our practice offers so many different services.? Maureen stated. ?We?re a one stop shopping convenience for our clients and they appreciate that. Whether it?s screening for skin cancer, evaluation of varicose veins or cosmetic treatment with dermal fillers like Restylane or Juvederm, if it has to do with skin, we have the training and experience to ensure you optimal results.?

Vein Specialties, Body Oasis Laser Aesthetics, and Southwest Skin and Cancer Institute would like to thank Costco for the opportunity to participate in this event, as well as extend a welcome to those that missed the fundraiser to call and speak with one of our experienced staff members about any of your skin care needs.

Vein specialist and cosmetic dermatologist Robin Fleck, M.D, is a double-board certified dermatologist and internist, recognized by the American Board of Dermatology and American Board of Internal Medicine. She is founder and Medical Director of Vein Specialties http://www.prescottvein.com/ in Prescott, Arizona, and is a fellow of the American Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery , the American Academy of Dermatology, and the American Venous Forum. Dr. Fleck is also the founder of Southwest Skin & Cancer Institute http://www.rejuvadoc.com/ and Body Oasis Laser Aesthetics http://www.bodyoasislaser.com/ in Prescott, Arizona.

"The Princess and the Frog" and Other Disney Movies Can Help Families Bond While Building Literacy Skills In Children

(PRWEB) December 4, 2009

"When your children see great Disney movies such as 'The Princess and the Frog,' they actually are on their way to a deeper understanding of storytelling. Storytelling helps promote literacy and math skills in school. With a little prompting from parents, movies such as this one can actually build up your child," says award-winning storyteller and author K. Sean Buvala.

Buvala, the director of Storyteller.net and a veteran of 23 years of national storytelling, thinks Disney movies provide great opportunities for families. While many storytellers disdain Disney movies, Buvala sees it differently. "All good storytellers take classic tales and adapt them for the needs of their audience, creating tales that speak to the life and times of those who listen. In 'The Princess and the Frog,' the creators have taken a very old fairytale and made it modern, relevant and accessible. In turn that creates new opportunities for contemporary audiences to embrace the ancient truths told in stories."

In his book "DaddyTeller," (http://www.daddyteller.com) Sean teaches Dads how to interact with their kids via storytelling. "When you take your kids to a good Disney movie, be sure to continue the conversation with your children later. When you tap into your child's imagination, you are helping them build up their skills for reading and writing." Buvala suggests that, in addition to telling stories to their children similar to the one in the movie, that parents engage their children in conversation:

"What do you think happens to such-and-such character after the movie was over?"

"Can you tell me the story you just saw?"

"Let's make up our own version of the movie but pretend it happens in Arizona (or your state)."

"Can you make up a story where the princess turns into a cow, or a butterfly or a dog?"

Buvala says that these types of questions build literacy in children through such skills as imagination and sequencing. "Parents really are the primary educators of their children and this role can be made eaiser by recognizing teachable moments such as movies and other media input," he says.

Buvala and six other national storytellers just recently released a CD of recorded stories. "Frog Kisser: Eight Stories of Enchantment" has eight traditional and new stories on it for adults and mature children, including two stories of frogs and royalty.
