New Children's Fantasy Book Will Test the Multicultural Impact on Children's Literature by President Obama and Disney

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) August 19, 2009

When Monroe S Tarver first created the elf princess for his children's story, "Imagia and the Magic Pearls" (Wizarding World Press, November 2009), he had never seen a black-skinned fairy or black elf princess before. Tarver was hoping his twist on the traditional classic fantasy image would be acceptable to the general mainstream market in 2009.

Imagine Tarver's surprise when media giant Disney also announced they would premier a black princess for the first time in their 2009 movie, "The Princess and the Frog". That would certainly seem to help, but Tarver still is not sure how it will impact printed works, such as "Imagia and the Magic Pearls," the first book in his "Tales from the Mapmaker" series.

"I am hoping it will open the door wider for me and other authors like me, but the book industry has been just as behind as the movie industry when it comes to the portrayal of ethnic characters," Tarver explained. "The recent controversy over Justine Larbalestier's cover reinforces that skin color still matters in publishing. My publisher and I both felt it was important to place my ethnic elf princess on the cover of my book. We are really going to be testing this."

Book publisher Bloomsbury recently decided to put the image of a long-haired, fair-skinned female on the cover of "Liar," a book about a short-haired black character. Larbalestier, the author, was not happy with the cover. However, her publisher overrode her objections. They felt the long-haired, pale girl would sell best--even though it had nothing to do with the story. Many people are examining the bookshelves and wondering whether the industry is truly responding to public taste, or if it is out of touch with the public and needs a "face lift."

The timing might seem that Tarver's and Disney's projects were inspired by President Barack Obama's success, but both began their work long before his race for the presidency. Therefore, those coincidences are not driven by hype but by a nation that has become truly multicultural. However, there is still the question of whether the book industry is ready for this cultural change.

It is clear that parents have been hoping for this trend for a long time. "I, as a black female, am happy that they are making a black princess film (wish they had one when I was a kid, would have been nice)," posted Kristin Smith on ComingSoon.net. Comments like this one reflect the opinions posted across the Web about a black main character in the upcoming Disney movie.

Monroe S Tarver, an African American, is the author and illustrator of Imagia and the Magic Pearls, an exciting adventure portraying the power of imagination. He attended Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia and currently resides in Charlotte, NC. Wizarding World Press is an established name in fantasy, pop culture and children's book publishing. They are best known for their incredibly popular series of Harry Potter fan guides, including the "Ultimate Unofficial Guide to the Mysteries of Harry Potter."

Sharing-Books.com, Promotional Partner of Room to Read, Publishes Innovative Interactive Book with art History Twist

Vancouver, BC (PRWEB) November 29, 2011

Mr. Pierre Lapointe, CEO of Shared Books Limited is pleased to announce the release of the first Android interactive tablet book produced by the company.

Published on the company's http://www.sharing-books.com web site by Vancouver painter Niina Chebry, Auguste RoDent, The Artist of Abundant Talent, is the charming story of an artist mouse, living in Paris at the end of the 1800s. Auguste is a mouse that sculpts masterpieces in imported cheese. Not using French cheese creates a scandal triggered by the Art critic Mr Brie. Auguste's reputation is restored by the mouse writer B.E.L.L.E. Eiffel.

Ms Chebry took two years to paint over 40 canvasses and to polish her rhyming narration. The book has beautiful illustrations with a fresh unique style. The text is very musical. The story's humour is multi-layered and it appeals to both children and parents. A graduate of the University of Alberta, Ms Chebry, wove her love of Art history throughout the book and shared her knowledge with the factoids built into the book's art gallery.

Thanks to the participation of BC Film and the BC Arts Council Interactive Fund Pilot Program, with funding provided by the 2010 Sports and Arts Legacy, the book was transformed into a fun interactive book by a talented team of graduates from the Vancouver Film School. The book innovates the genre by offering a portrait mode with interactive features, highlighted narration, and the discovery of art masterpieces that are added to a built-in art gallery as the book is explored. In landscape mode the book reads like a paper book to offer parents the pleasure of reading a book with their child.

Mr Lapointe comments: " This has been a labor of love for all participants. Everyone's was emotionally engaged not only because this is a great book, but also because of our commitment as promotional partner of Room to Read to donate a significant portion of our revenue to help Room to Read's literacy and education gender equality missions."

The book was developed on Motorola Xoom tablets. It is currently being ported for the IPad and the Amazon Fire tablets. More details can be found at http://www.augusterodent.com

New Book Release: "Once Upon A Time" with a Satiric Twist

Santa Fe, NM (Vocus/PRWEB) January 13, 2011

?Once upon a time?? is a phrase children grow up knowing introduces a story not only of adventure and romance but of human plight and peril, heroic effort and victory ? and instruction.

Like many of us, Roberta Parry was fed as a child traditional folk literature, which she swallowed whole without question. But as an adult, introducing these tales to her daughter, she found some no longer went down so easily. In rejection of the image of and attitude toward women presented by the eighteenth-century grim brothers, she determined to right the record from the experience and perspective of a twenty-first-century woman.

FEMME TALES: Six short Sagas and One Long Story is a playful, irreverent, sometimes camp re-vision of the Grimm?s tales. ?Little Red Riding Hood? becomes ?Little Red Jogging Suit,? wherein a sparky girl and her spunky grandmother take on a wolf in sheep?s clothing, only to find themselves victims of the legal/judicial system. In ?Hannah and Greggo,? closet-cousins of ?Hansel and Gretel,? a savvy big sister saves her innocent little brother from the clutches of a wicked warlock.

Other rightings-of-the-record include: ?The Toad Prince or The Dog Princess or Hopeless Henry,? ?Sungold and the Seven Midgets,? ?AshesAngie,? ?Sweeping Beauty,? and ?Ms. Fisherwoman and Spouse,? illegitimate offspring of ?The Frog King,? ?Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,? ?Cinderella,? ?Sleeping Beauty,? and ?The Fisherman and His Wife.?

May you read with a laugh ? and a nod, Parry invites. For more information on this book, interested parties may log on to http://www.Xlibris.com.

Britney, Paris, and Other Celebrities Embrace Latest Self Help Book To the Stars

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) August 1, 2008

Maybe stars are more like us than we realize. When we're feeling stuck in some area of our lives, many of us look for answers by perusing the self help section of our local Barnes and Nobles. With the latest trend of celebrities buying and even endorsing self improvement literature, regular folks who read about how to spice up their love lives or manifest more money may just spot a famous face pouring through the same self improvement books as them.

This is an interesting trend. Stars who seem to have it all: Looks, money, fame, supportive families, and creative fulfillment are still looking for ways to improve themselves by reading books that promise the good life(Or in their case, an "even better" life). Oprah Winfrey has become a very public advocate of Eckhart Tolle's spiritual books, even going so far as to sponsor globally telecast online workshops with the spiritual teacher. In her decades as a journalist, Oprah says endorsing Tolle has been the most important thing she's ever done. Many famous faces have endorsed the now legendary self help book, The Secret, including Winfrey, Britney Spears, and Nicole Kidman. Even Paris Hilton claims The Secret was one of two books that helped her stay strong while serving jail time.

The latest uber-trendy book becoming hip with the celeb crowd is called:"Feel it Real! A Guided Approach To Bringing The Law of Attraction Into Your Life" by Denise Coates; a book that claims to help readers manifest more joy, money, health, romance, and career success into their lives by pretending they already have their desires. It consists of fifty games the reader plays in order to "shift their vibration" to feel like their desires have already manifested. Coates claims that "when you imagine you already have your desires, you shift your body chemistry and your moods lift". She also claims that by focusing on one's desires as if they are already here, one invokes the "Law of Attraction'(made famous by The Secret) to magically draw their desires to them.

Feel it Real's sudden popularity could be due to the fact that it gives readers hope and faith during these trying economic times. It endorses a sense of personal empowerment which is something our downtrodden country may look to in order to keep from feeling hopeless. Or maybe it is simply getting popular because celebrities have made Feel it Real! the "It" book of summer.

Either way, it is an interesting phenomenon that celebs who have been spotted reading Feel it Real!: (Britney Spears, ParisHilton, Lindsey Lohan, Meg Ryan, Nicole Kidman, and Sarah Ferguson ("Fergie") of The Black Eyed Peas, among others) have any material desires left to fulfill. What could these stars possibly want more of? It is feasible to say that Britney could use more self love or she could use Feel it Real! to help her visualize her custody court cases going well. But what about Oprah, who brought the Law of Attraction into our homes when she had The Secret authors on her show? She may have been trying to help others learn to improve their lives, which is applaudable. But personally, what else could she want?

Maybe the answer is that no matter how much good fortune anyone has in his or her life, there is always going to be something new to wish for; some new dream to strive towards. Somehow, this makes the celebrities seem downright human; just like the rest of us.

W. Robert (Bob) Gouin?s New Book Studies Of Biblical Chronology

FARMINGTON, Mo. (PRWEB) December 14, 2011

Harold Camping?s Radio Website has grabbed national headlines on three separate occasions with his predictions of the date of the Rapture. Although each of his predicted Rapture dates have passed without incident ? he recently apologized as reported in the Huffington Post?s article, ?Harold Camping Apologizes For Faulty Rapture Predictions And Retires, Report States? ? Camping?s study of chronology in the Bible is one that many researchers approach with dedication and seriousness. In Walter Robert Gouin?s new book, ?Chronicles III: Moses 1490 Exodus, to Cyrus of Persia 485 BCE Chronological Hebrew History of Israel and Judah?s Patriarchs, Judges, Kings, Prophets & Governors? (published by AuthorHouse), Gouin offers readers his third of five academic works ? supported by Biblical Scriptures with references of meticulous sources ? examining Bible chronology.

?Chronicles III? has come about from Gouin?s longtime labor of love. For the past three and a half decades, he has worked perseveringly at researching the Bible, as he says, ?for a more in-depth Proof Text of the Bible.? In this new book, he carries on that effort, offering readers a look at the chronology of the events of the Books from Genesis through Chronicles II ? with relevant prophets of the times and events.

A sequel to ?Exodus Solved! Tate Publishing 2011, and precursor to, tentatively titled ?Ancient History of the Israelite Nation, (pending publication), Chronicles III is Gouin?s hope of glorifying God. Informative and easy-to-read Scripture, this book is excellent for anyone interested in learning more about the Bible events, than can be gleaned from reading only one Bible version.

About the Author

A native of Bonne Terre, Missouri, Walter Robert Gouin, a reborn Christian since 1972, in 1975 saw the need for a more in-depth harmony of the Gospels. So in 1975 he enrolled in a basic course in New Testament Greek at the Long Beach Bible Institute of California. As he related ?It was one Saturday morning in 1975 at my kitchen table, in my second semester of Greek, I slammed my pencil down and said ?Who do you think you are, to be able to learn Greek?? I went to my recliner and picked up Darlene Bee's Poem Book and opened it at random. I read ?Dear child, why are you fretting, I know your fear of languages. ... But all this will pass away under my tutelage. You will be amazed at how I have worked, and I will be glorified by your proficiency.? I have truly been amazed at how He has worked. Now it is time for GOD to be glorified.? Since 1979 his first year hours were eight to 16, six days a week, recording his findings in a four column harmony of the persons, dates, times, directions and places that are not explicit in the four Gospels of the Bible. After 39 years in California he retired in 1993 and moved back to Missouri and completed his first two volumes, Proof Text of the Gospels, and Last Will and Testament in 1995, still pending publication. Then he began his research of the OT, and completed the three volumes in 2011.
